祖谷のかずら橋

Iya-no-Kazurabashi

Located in the remote Iya Valley, a hidden region associated with the legend of the defeated Heike clan, this is one of Japan’s Three Unusual Bridges and has been designated a National Important Tangible Folk Cultural Property.

The approximately 45-meter-long suspension bridge, woven from shirokuchi kazura vines, was once used as a daily route for local travel and is still completely rebuilt every three years using traditional methods.

This popular sightseeing spot offers both the thrill of looking down into the valley below and a landscape that blends beautifully with nature. The scenic gorge also changes its appearance with the seasons, offering stunning views throughout the year.

Oboke-kyo & Koboke-kyo

The Oboke and Koboke Gorges are scenic valleys formed by river erosion of crystalline schist, featuring striking rock formations that resemble marble sculptures.

In spring, cherry blossoms reflect on the clear river, while in autumn the gorge is beautifully colored with fall foliage, and river boating is also available.

Downstream, Koboke Gorge is smaller in scale, but is known for its beautiful rock surfaces and unique formations. Both gorges are designated as Places of Scenic Beauty in Japan.

The ever-changing landscape throughout the seasons continues to captivate visitors.

Iya Valley and The Statue of a Peeing Boy

In the deep V-shaped gorge, the emerald-green Iya River flows below, offering breathtaking views that seem to draw you in from above.

In autumn, the entire valley—from the riverbed to the mountain peaks—is covered in vibrant fall colors, which can also be enjoyed from car windows.

Along the cliffs, remnants of stones from the original construction of the Iya road remain, and above them stands the famous Peeing Boy statue, inspired by a local tale of bravery, now a beloved symbol of the gorge.

Mt. Tsurugi

Mt. Tsurugi, the second highest peak in western Japan at 1,955 meters, is one of Japan’s 100 Famous Mountains. From the summit, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of sea of clouds, the Seto Inland Sea, and even Cape Ashizuri in the distance.

A ropeway makes the climb easy and accessible, making it popular even among beginners.

The mountain is also known as a sacred peak linked to the Heike clan legend, and its name is said to originate from the story that Emperor Antoku’s sword was hidden here. At the summit, visitors can experience spectacular views such as a star-filled sky and sea of clouds.
